How is medical treatment ensured?
We have an in-house nurse, who, along with the "family parents" is the first contact person for all needs related to health. In case of sickness, it is also possible for students to be driven to our local general practitioner. Our nurse also organises appointments with specialists in Fulda.
How are social and disciplinary problems handled?
As in normal daily life, in the Lietz boarding schools too, there are conflicts between students or between students and teachers. Children are urged to seek dialogue and to resolve their conflicts in a fair and non-violent manner. Students who repeatedly transgress against the rules are subject to disciplinary measures, such as additional tasks or special services on the campus, and if the violations are serious, temporary suspension or even rustication may be applied. Social pedagogues supplement the teaching staff and help if there are serious problems.
What happens if there are learning problems?
Remedial teaching or private lessons are integrated in the school's daily schedule as a fixed component. Help is provided during recreational hours if the usual study and exercise times are not enough. For students with developmental disorders (dyslexia, dyscalculia), there is suitable assistance available, which the schools take care of directly.
What does a typical day look like?
Daily life in Castle Bieberstein varies only to a minimum extent depending on the class. Whereas students of the E-Phase must start in the morning between seven and quarter past with a morning jog, so that they can start the day fresh and fit, the day starts for students of the Q-phase only after breakfast at a quarter to eight.
After breakfast – i.e. from ten minutes after eight onwards – the school day starts at Castle Bieberstein. This is also subject to slight variations depending on the class. But there is one thing common to all: At Castle Bieberstein, with only a few exceptions, we teach in double periods. For the E-Phase students, who are taught in classes, the day starts with the study hour. Here, the students can prepare for the day. This is followed by the respective “epochal” lessons – a German method. The students of the Q-Phase are organised into courses and have individually tailored time-tables. The lunch break and lunch for all is between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
Lunch break is followed by another block of lessons, which can last up to 6.25 p.m. depending on subjects. Supper for all is at 6:30 p.m. The time between supper and lights out is free. Students meet their friends for a convivial chat, or they can visit an activity club, or indulge in sports or games, or study together for a written test. There are many possibilities here. Lights out is at 10:30 p.m. with a round by the "family parents". During this round, they check the tidiness of the rooms, and also spare some time for discussions. This is followed by sleep, with, it is hoped, sweet dreams!
